Reasons Blisters Develop on the Feet

A common reason for blisters to develop on the feet is excessive pressure. This can happen as a result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, which may cause a part of the foot to rub against the shoe. A blister looks like a small bubble. It is filled with liquid and protects the damaged skin until it is replaced by new skin. It will gradually drain when the healing process is completed, and it is beneficial to refrain from prematurely popping it. Additional reasons to get a blister on the foot can consist of enduring a bad sunburn or having an allergic reaction to an insect bite. They may also develop from having an illness such as chickenpox. Treatment can begin with changing the shoes that are worn, followed by keeping the affected area clean and dry. Some people find it helpful to wear a protective covering over the blister until it has healed. If you have a blister on your foot, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you properly manage this condition.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact one of our podiatrists of Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Two Categories of Flat Feet

Pain can sometimes occur in people who have flat feet. The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and this may extend into adulthood. Flat feet are defined as the foot having no arch or very low arches. This can cause an inability for the foot to lie flat on the ground and can affect posture. Some of the symptoms that patients may have with flat feet are swelling, pain, and stiffness, which may indicate an underlying disorder in adults. Flat feet can affect the alignment of the body and can compromise walking, standing, and running. The two categories of flat feet can include flexible and rigid. Children are more affected by flexible flat feet, and the arch cannot be seen while standing but will reappear while sitting down. The arch is non-existent in people who have rigid flat feet, regardless of any weight that is put on the foot. There are specific stretches that can be done to strengthen the foot. If you have flat feet, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you with relief techniques.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Hammertoe Stretches

Hammertoe is a deformity that affects the toes and can be uncomfortable. It can happen from genetic reasons, or from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. This ailment affects the second and third toes, and pushes the end of the toe downward, causing the middle joint to point up. Many people who have this condition often have corns and calluses that develop on top of the joints. This can happen as a result of the toe hitting the top of the shoe. People who are born with long toes may develop hammertoe, in addition to people who have bunions. Specific stretches for hammertoe can be done that can help to keep the joints flexible. Some people find it helpful to stretch the toe joints with their hands, or by picking up marbles with their toes. If you have hammertoe, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can guide you toward effective treatment methods.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

What Can I Wear Besides Flip Flops?

Flip-flops are certainly a popular shoe style. However, they are not a completely healthy option due to the lack of support that they provide. Many patients often wonder what they can wear besides flip-flops. The answer is that there are a variety of different summer shoes that a person might consider wearing. For example, a person might wear a supportive pair of sandals that have a strap around the back of the foot. A person also might consider wearing espadrilles instead of flip-flops. These are essentially canvas shoes. The benefit is that, unlike flip flops, the feet need not scrunch up to keep the shoe on the foot. Also, it can be important to select shoes that provide adequate support. If you are someone that is looking for an alternative to flip flops, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for more information.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Eastern Carolina Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.
